Zen sent an email just after midnight last night saying the broadband should be activated by 6pm today. I've been trying all evening to connect, and theres no response. Nothing. Annoyingly, their support phone number closes at 5pm, so I can't get any help.

It's either a problem with my configuration, or a problem at their end, or a delay in activating the ADSL line. Is there any easy way to determine which is likely to be the problem?

Or can anyone give me any helpful hints on how to avoid likely pitfalls with configuring an ADSL modem?

Unplugging all the phones while it works out whether there's a signal or not can be a good thing.  If you have a lot of things connected to the line it can exceed the capacity -- in the sense that five phones draw too much current on a line with an REN rating of 4.  For some reason, computers are particularly sensitive; I could never get a modem connection faster than 33 kB/s (and frequently about 19) unless I unplugged the phone at the old flat ...

... of course, ADSL is supposed to be more robust.  Once it's hooked up, I've found it mostly stays online, but it takes a while to get there ....

And, most especially, thank you for the chocolate!
