Got attacked on the Cambridge-London train on my way home from a lovely day out in Cambridge. I'm home now, but horribly shaken and really won't be sleeping very well I fear. *shakes* My fingers are still trembling as I write this.
10-12 idiots boarded the train, and roamed up and down threatening people (about a dozen people in my carriage) obviously looking for a target, asking people what was in their bags, and being overfriendly with the single female passengers - train approached a station and they picked on me, attempted to grab my bag (which I was holding very tightly by this stage) and pulled it away from me. I kept hold of it, but they managed to open it and my things went everywhere. They quickly fled and jumped off the train. Witnesses helped me up and I gathered my belongings, minus my mobile, which they must have taken. Nice woman offered me a lift back to my place from the station, refusing to let me travel any further on my own.
Disbelief that they struck so openly in front of so many witnesses, on a route I use often. Relief that it's now over, and they didn't get anything else, nor am I hurt physically (although I'm sure hurt in other ways). Mobile is replaceable, may cost money I'm short of right now. Argh.
PLEASE SEND ME YOUR PHONENUMBERS!!! Stupid me had not copied most of them from my mobile, so assume I don't know your number now. Also (obviously) don't try and phone me on my number (I'm trying to immobilize the phone) and if you get do get phoned from my old number (or have already had a call from my number in the last 2 hours) it was not me.

Oh honey!
Date: 2003-04-27 02:09 pm (UTC)There are some important things to remember...
These sad individuals have penises only 2 inches long when erect (fact, I've done a study I have and no Joe wasn't in the sample)
They know nothing about fluffyness, astrohpysics and being generally lovely so whilst they may have your phone they are still not as well off as you are.
There are still far more nice people in the world than nasty (like the woman who took you home)and if sometimes they don't come to your rescue it is probably because they are ordinary and scared like you
If you ever see these people again when I am with you I will kick their asses and then I will get Joe to kick their asses too (it is very hard to feel afraid if you hold in your head the image of an angry Joe hitting someone with his unicycle - try it)
Maybe, the other lesson we should learn from this is how important it is to stand up to people. I used to be very courageous about confronting people when they were doing bad stuff (I even stopped a fight outside a pub once) but I've become gradually more fraidy. Most of the time though if one person has the guts to stand up for someone there is a domino effect and others will join in. It's too easy to just sit there feeling grateful it isn't happening to you, which is missing the point, because it's only luck that you aren't the one being picked on.
If you need cake or hugs or vodka or money just say. And I'll e-mail you both our numbers.
Lots of love
Penny

Date: 2003-04-27 05:06 pm (UTC)Standing up to people can be hard - however i'm certain if they had tried anything on *anyone* else in the carridge, i'd have been at them like a fury - i was ready for that, and even expecting it, given how they'd been treting the female passengers- i just wasn't ready for them picking on me alone.
I'm not going to say no to cake or vodka or hugs! :) I'd feel guilty taking any money, despite how broke i am right now. Hope to see you sometime soon, after your exams have finished. :)
