Got attacked on the Cambridge-London train on my way home from a lovely day out in Cambridge. I'm home now, but horribly shaken and really won't be sleeping very well I fear. *shakes* My fingers are still trembling as I write this.
10-12 idiots boarded the train, and roamed up and down threatening people (about a dozen people in my carriage) obviously looking for a target, asking people what was in their bags, and being overfriendly with the single female passengers - train approached a station and they picked on me, attempted to grab my bag (which I was holding very tightly by this stage) and pulled it away from me. I kept hold of it, but they managed to open it and my things went everywhere. They quickly fled and jumped off the train. Witnesses helped me up and I gathered my belongings, minus my mobile, which they must have taken. Nice woman offered me a lift back to my place from the station, refusing to let me travel any further on my own.
Disbelief that they struck so openly in front of so many witnesses, on a route I use often. Relief that it's now over, and they didn't get anything else, nor am I hurt physically (although I'm sure hurt in other ways). Mobile is replaceable, may cost money I'm short of right now. Argh.
PLEASE SEND ME YOUR PHONENUMBERS!!! Stupid me had not copied most of them from my mobile, so assume I don't know your number now. Also (obviously) don't try and phone me on my number (I'm trying to immobilize the phone) and if you get do get phoned from my old number (or have already had a call from my number in the last 2 hours) it was not me.

Thinking of you.

Date: 2003-04-27 02:50 am (UTC)i hate trains at the best of times for the reason you've just described. its groups of bored kids with nothing better to do that cause the majority of prolems. i'm surprised no-one else on the train helped you a bit more. perhaps they were scared too.
bring back train warden people, thats what I say...

Date: 2003-04-27 03:26 am (UTC)I was beaten up on the way to school once - that was not fun at all. I was shaken up for ages afterwards and took a different route after that.

Date: 2003-04-27 05:15 am (UTC)That mings lotsly -- not much comfort, I know, but I've never heard of that kind of robbery happening before and I'd guess that's because people doing that kind of thing are likely to get caught very quickly (lots of witnesses, police often being at stations, etc.).
*hughughughughughughughughughughug* Hope you have a patch of good luck soon to make up for the bad patch.
Will mail you with numbers.

Date: 2003-04-27 06:02 am (UTC)Hoping they get caught too - but realistically i think they may get away with it - BT transport police don't want to take a statement until monday, which means they're not exactly in any hurry to catch anyone.
I'd seriously considered phoning 999 because the situation was getting out of hand on the train, but the last thing i wanted to do was get my mobile out of my bag and reveal that I had something of value for them to take - but in the end they got it anyway. Nor could i get to the train alarm, as they were blocking me in. You'e right maybe i should seriously consider a rape alarm or somesuch - i'd never thought they'd pick me - just before they attacked i was more worried about the woman opposite me that was looking very scared at their unwelcome advances.
Still, am feeling a bit better today. :)

Date: 2003-04-27 06:09 am (UTC)I'd always thought trains were safe - until yesterday. I now realsie what a sitting target a lone traveller is in one - nowhere for me to escape to, and at a station they can jump off and escape quickly. In future i'm going to be very wary about travelling alone in the evenings on slow trains that stop at the small local stations. I get the impression other people would have helped if they thought it would make a difference, but there were so many robbers it was inevitable they had the upper hand. The other passangers were immense help afterwards, helping me pull myself back together, and especially Rachel (the friendly stranger who helped me home and gave me her number as a witness).
There didn't even appear to be a guard on the train - nobody checked tickets, there must have been only the driver.
Thanks for the support and advice and hugs. :)

Date: 2003-04-27 06:56 am (UTC)Weirdness: Once I was asleep on a train back to London in the middle of the day. The train pulled up at a station and a gang of teenagers emptied a bottle of water over me through the open window of the carriage, then ran away...
