Well you have a quite photogenic (though she doesn't believe it) flatmate to try it out on. This would combine well with her lack of pics she likes for her website.
Anyway bit of obvious advice for you - try and get some rechargable batteries for it as they get through batteries like there is no tomorrow.

Thanks for advice on rechargeable batteries. I'm planning to get some, and charger for them, maybe on saturday. The only problem with those, is that they apparently take *forever* to charge up, during which time of course i can't use the camera. I do however have a small stash of normal batteries for it to devour first, so i may be safe for a while.
