Who Should You Vote For?

Who should I vote for?

Your expected outcome:

Liberal Democrat

Your actual outcome:

Labour -6
Conservative -46
Liberal Democrat 48
UK Independence Party -35
Green 38

You should vote: Liberal Democrat

The LibDems take a strong stand against tax cuts and a strong one in favour of public services: they would make long-term residential care for the elderly free across the UK, and scrap university tuition fees. They are in favour of a ban on smoking in public places, but would relax laws on cannabis. They propose to change vehicle taxation to be based on usage rather than ownership.

Take the test at Who Should You Vote For

Am going to urge everyone to take the above test. The results should be interesting, I think. Can anyone prove it biased? *curious*

The results will be that everyone gets told to vote Lib Dem. Even I got told I should vote Lib Dem.

I don't think it's necessarily purposeful bias, but I think the results are . . . striking.

Well, I got -46 for Lib Dem, despite being pro-cannabis...

If only I could actually vote for any of the parties who will be deciding the laws that govern me, but oh no, we get to vote for bollocking Northern Ireland parties and the stupid assembly is devolved so we're still ruled by England/Wales government anyway. Bah!

But um yes, if I was voting:

I'm expecting to get something very similar; reading through the BBC's "manifestos in a nutshell" I picked Lib Dem & Green above the other three in everything, and of the two, I'd probably go Lib Dem but only because Green are IMO OTT in a couple of areas. Will have a look later and see what they say.

If that's biased, then that probably means I'm actually a raging Tory!

I don't think it's biased, unless there proves to be a consistent difference between expected and actual outcomes. I suspect it's more that this corner of LJ is a highly selected cross section of society, with *much* more similarity in our general views than a random subset of the population.

Note I voted neutral on the Euro and in favour of the Constitution, but still got a positive for UKIP! Don't know what their other policies are, but still, eh?

See my results - I got a far higher UKIP than I was expecting too

I don't see any reason to think that it's purposefully biased, but it's definitely biased. I think I've seen exactly one case of someone being told to vote other than Lib Dem. This includes me - and I can tell you that that's pretty seriously wrong.

the questions are phrased in such a way that the left-wing response seems more reasonable. Also, the choice of which manifesto points to address shows evidence of bias.

In my case I've been shunted rightwards into the LDP box.

Which questions in particular are you thinking of? They all seem pretty straight-talking to me. Maybe "Money that would otherwise be spent on public services should be spent on tax cuts"? A true Tory should really agree with that, even though the Tory policy explicitly only talks about cutting bureaucracy.

The phrasing skirts away from the obvious fact that the 'money' in question is of course tax revenue, and therefore it is a question of taking less from the taxpayer rather than of gifting them with this mysterious money that it is implied somehow 'belongs' to the government.

You could just as well ask 'Are you willing to give an increasing proportion of your income to the government (and the EU)' and get very different answers. ;)

Yes - the Tories under Howard are virtually as statist as the current regime. UKIP, on the other hand, have been making some interesting minarchist / classical liberal / free market noises of late.

Meep, I got positive points for UKIP! Icky icky!
Still an obvious LibDem win though.

I got lib dem too

I don't think it's biased, but maybe that's cos i think lib dems ARE the most sensible party...

I tried it again with "conservative" answers, and came out highly in favour of conservatives, and highly against libdems... so it can go either way....

I reckon you're right about the bias in favour of Lib Dems, for instance the phrasing on the questions about tax. There was nothing about spending on the police, which I believe is a higher priority with some of the other parties.
