Two hours of computing chaos.....
That class was just hell. Neither of the proper teachers turned up, and I was the only teaching assistant who managed to make it in. The students managed to defeat the tube strike and be there, so I had to teach the whole class how to use Java all on my own. Eeeep!
Everything that could break did so. And as I'd been hired to help out with the programming, and was totally unfamilar with the way the system was set up, and the sysadmin was also not around, not much could be done. Several people were completely unable to login to any computer. Nobody could read their email, which told them which webpage the course instructions were on. The default GUI unzipper failed to extract all the java library files from the archive zip file the students were all given. Most of the students were totally unfamilair with UNIX, and some didn't know anything about computers at all. The Java compiler wasn't setup to look in the current directory for libraries, so it was hard to compile things. Aaaaaaaaaaaargh!
And I had to run around like a mad thing trying to sort out everyones problems all on my own. It was a major achievement when the first student managed to get 'Hello World' to run properly! Yay! By the end of two hours, most had got this to work, so it felt like i'd had some success. I hope tomorrow goes better!

There really should be a 'hug' icon available on lj.

Hug icon
I've got to teach the next lot in a few minutes. Today should be better, the other teachers have no tube strike to stop them being there this time!
