Small victory

I just hacked my DVD player to be multi-region. Hoorah! I should have done that long long ago. It was all very simple and painless. Now I can watch all my Azumanga Diaoh (Region 1) on my shiny big TV. Even more exciting, I can now borrow Nini’s Anime treasure-horde of doom and watch it all nicely.

Um....if you don’t see me for the next year, that’ll be me turning into an Otaku. Oh dearie me.

How did you do it? I used AnyDVD on my old computer, but I've managed to mislay the license key on my trip to my new computer, and am accordingly peeved.

Computer-illiterate here, care to explain further? I don't think putting "ogle" into Google would yield quite the desired result.

the programs he's talking about are on linux (or a different flavour of *nix), rather than windows, which i'm guessing anydvd is on?

My computer was already using a multiregion playback (linux + xine + libdvdcss). I'm sure there must be ways to do so in Windows too.

What I hacked was the DVD player that's hooked up to my TV set, which always claimed it was Region 2 only.

Most DVD players have a very hidden menu to set the region number they are in. It just a case of finding out how to make the menu appear, which basically means looking up the model of DVD player on the interweb. Usually it's done by some arcane series of presses on the remote control, at the full moon, whilst dancing around the set wearing a dark gown, with blood red candles lit in a large circle all around, weilding a sacrificial bar of chocolate. At least, that's how my imagination thinks how it should have happened.
