Musical anarchy

The Rise and Fall of Deon Vonniget - words truly fail me. Life, Death and Dairy Products.
the_lady_lily dragged me along to see this highly pretentious and very funny musical comedy last Wednesday, where she fangirled a lot over J (her gay friend, the star of the show). A truly anarchic mix of Beethoven, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Terry Wogan, Pink Floyd, Germaine Greer, songs about cheese, songs about dissecting your lover, and even a drag act, all charting the fictional life of legendary Deon Vonniget, a composer laying waste to every music genre ever created. I was in uncontrollable giggles throughout. It had everything from David (and Goliath) and the amazing technicolour dreamcar (chitty chitty bang bang) to DOGS (to the tune of CATS), with hand puppets about a love song between a dog and a sheep. As I said, words fail me. If I was gay, I'd be crushing too. Maybe I am. *speechless*
TheOysterband ultra self-indulgent weekender Big Session in Leicester is where I’ve been for the past few days. Organized by the Oysterband, and featuring lots of nice folky music by Oysterband, Eliza Carthy, Oysterband, Mark Chadwick of the Levellers, Oysterband, Justin Sullivan of NMA, Oysterband, Whapweasel, Oysterband, Show of Hands and some others, all finishing off with...er...Oysterband. Supurb if you’re a fan of Oysterband like me.
libellum‘s parents put me and
smhwpf up at their place at short notice, and were nothing short of lovely. Everyone should meet
libellum’s mum and dad - they ROCK.
libellum‘s dad not only is a mine of knowledge from everything about religion to near-death-experiences to folk history to music to like everything else in the world, he plied us with drink and introduced me and Sam to King Crimson and a eclectic assortment of other bands I’ve never gotten around to listening to (summarized here). I am much in debt to him for this. There was also REAL BEER and Perries, and we managed to drink the bar dry by the Saturday evening (thanks in no small part to
libellum). And much fun was had by all. *bounce*
Thinking of real beer, the infamous Oakdale Arms Beer Festival makes a welcome re-emergence from Wednesday to Sunday this week. I do intend to get along there at some point, possibly sometime on the Sunday to catch up with
damerell and play Giant Jenga. Or something like that. Let me know if you’re going to be there any day, and I’ll see if I can join you. *hopefulnoises*
Much other excitements too!! Tomorrow is
mirabehn‘s group expedition to see As you like it with Reece Shearsmith. Friday is
duranorak’s invasion of a City of London pub with men in eyeliner. And of course I am hugely looking forward to seeing pretty
cassielalone at the weekend, who’s going to help me pack all my worldly belongings into little cardboard boxes (help!!!). *pathetichopelessnoises*
