Candles and pyromania
Feb. 2nd, 2003 11:13 pmFor Candlemas today I lit dozens of candles and spread them around my room. It was exceedingly pretty, what with candlelight flickering around and light fluttering off everything. Yay for candles.
This stopped being pretty when one of my candle decorations set alight. This is some fake plastic ivy leaves and other bits that came with the candlestick, which goes around the holder, and makes it look nicer. I've had it for years, and not had any problems with it, and always assumed it was fireproof. It suddenly went up in flames and lots of acrid black smoke! Then it started melting and dripping big globs of hot melty and flaming plastic all over my bookcase!!!!
Eeeep!!! At this stage I had visions of my entire bookcase going up in flames.
I got the fire under control in the end, before anything else got damaged, although the candle decoration was a lump of very deformed charred plastic, and got binned.
So I guess I was lucky. And I think theres a firefighters strike on too, which could have made things very messy if it had gotten any worse.

*hugs*
I didn't even know it was Candlemas...

Date: 2003-02-02 03:36 pm (UTC)Still, maybe i need to find some new candle decorations. And some more candles! After today I used most of the rest of my candle-horde up.
Candlemas is also called Imbolc (the celtic name) or bridesday (the pagan name), and used to be St Valentines day in the old Julian calendar. Then pope gregory shifted the calendar by 12 days, and bridesday moved to the 2nd, even if Valentines day stuck on the 14th.

Church was gorgeously decorated, though the main service was in the morning, so we didn't quite get the full effect. I prefer it when Candlemas falls on a weekday - then we have an absolutely magical evening service.
Yikes

Date: 2003-02-03 03:09 am (UTC)They had a thing on some watch dog type program about the candles with decoration round the bottom, they showed how it would go up in flames coz the bits round the bottom wernt fireproof (most have a warning on them but on the bottom so no 1 sees it!!)
Whats the point in a non fire proof surround for a candle!! Its just askin to be torched heh ;)

Date: 2003-02-03 01:53 pm (UTC)I thing these decorations may actually be the ones that watch dog thing might be referring to, come ot think of it. I've still got one left, so i'll go have a look at it and see if it says anything about being flammable. I can just imagine it saying 'candle decoration - flammable- keep away from flames!' or something equally stupid.
NATO takes over command of military operations in Libya
Date: 2011-04-08 11:52 am (UTC)The UN Security Council imposed the no-fly zone over Libya on March 17, along with ordering "all necessary measures" to protect civilians from Muammar Gaddafi's attacks on rebel-held towns.
The 28 NATO ambassadors met on Sunday to decide on further military plans in Libya.
The United States transfers command for a no-fly zone over Libya to NATO, while coalition forces will continue to protect civilian population from attacks by Gaddafi forces.
The military operation in Libya, codenamed Odyssey Dawn, has been conducted so far jointly by 13 states, including the United States, Britain and France.
NATO members decided on Thursday to assume responsibility for the enforcement of a no-fly zone in Libya, but could not agree on taking full command of all military operations in the country.
Meanwhile, leaders of the 27 European Union states on Thursday issued a statement saying the EU stood ready to assist in building a new Libya "in cooperation with the United Nations, the Arab League, the African Union and others."
