Rome is great. Two tips immediately spring to mind: don't get ripped off by the street pizza vendors - I asked them for a small slice, and they gave me a big one (much pricier). I put it down to my poor Italian until I found out that at least two of the other people on our tour had the same experience. Secondly, the Colosseum is amazing - when we went there were people offering free tours as a taster for some other tours they ran. I think it was a mixture of reliable historical fact and more dubious speculation, but very entertaining nonetheless.
Will look forward to hearing about Venice as that's where Matt and I are going for our honeymoon next May.
