I really wasn't expecting this....

Catt returned from edinburgh yesterday evening. With presents. The darling creature had bought me a lovely pink fluffy bag, and and encyclopedia of fishies. Yay! They're wonderful presents.

I'm not sure what to make of this development. Last week we were engaged in a cold war, not speaking and I know I did/said some really nasty things to her as I just wanted to avoid her. And despite all this, she buys me presents. I'm stunned.

Maybe I should actually act on people's wise advice and not just dig myself into more holes. Anyone who buys me presents must be a nice person! :)

Maybe she bought you presents *because* you were nasty. I mean, often when you think you've been nasty the other person will think they're the nasty one for provoking you.

But but.....I don't want to have to be nasty to people for them to be nice to me. That.....doesn't seem right in my worldview. I want to be nice to people, and make people happy, and then they can be nice back if they like me.

I see your point though. And being nasty to someone just because they're nasty to me doesn't get me anywhere. I should listen to my own advice.

Seriously though, I would not expect you to be nasty to people even if it *did* reliably make them be nice to you, which is why I didn't add a caveat saying 'don't go being nasty all the time because of this!' :) I'm really pleased you don't believe in 'an eye for an eye' - a lot of people don't see it like that. As it were.

I think people *do* sometimes reward you for treating them badly, either because they hate themselves so being treated well makes them squirm, or just because anyone who treats them with disdain is obviously better than them (!) But I don't think it's a very good basis on which to build a friendship, because one day they'll probably stop needing to be treated badly, and then they'll be very pissed off at you. Also, it's just not very good for your soul or theirs.
