Origins of Halloween

On sunday asylum was discussing the origins of the halloween festival. This was extremely interesting, exploring the ancient celtic new year (with bonfires), and the pagan traditions (the barrier between the living and the dead being thin), how the Romans added to it (where the tradition of bobbing for apples comes from apparently) and so on. It was finally christianised when some pope moved the festival of martyrs to co-incide. It did appear however, that I was the only one there who knew how to pronounce 'Samhain' correctly. Eeep. We then listened to the story of Jack (and some very amusing variations), which I'm sure i've heard before, but not for a very long time.

Afterwards Donna dragged a group of us out to the Pizza Hut on Oxford Street, where the walls are lined with Miros. Wow.

Goths ruturn from whitby....

Whitby has been and gone, and I wasn't there this time. snow_leopard returned home yesterday evening, looking very tired, but bearing yummy gifts of Whitby Rock and Whitby Fudge. Sounds like she had a fun time there tying herself to random blokes, despite there being a shortage of cute men (and possibly cute lesbians?) there this time. It's nice to have her back in the house though. *smallsmile*

Friday Party arrangements have been over-organised. We have ordered food and wine for party, and ingredietns to bake cake with. I made the mistake of buying pizzas for party and then realised there was no space to keep them, so snow_leopard and inskauldrak have devoured them already. Ooops. Have ordered more pizzas to arrive just before party. It does sound like lots of you will be turning up, which is very good news. Yay! *happybounce*
