Though you should be glad it was just little mice, it could have been RATS! Rats eat anything and can be pretty viscious. We have rats in our house on Oland every winter and they've been known to eat pillows, clothes, bits of wood and books that I've been foolish enough to forget there. Mice are pretty amazing with squeezing through things. I think I read somewhere that they can fold their skeleton together to make them really flat. (I was really impressed by that.)
