Hrey cool!
Date: 2004-09-05 09:01 pm (UTC)Yes yes I know I can go anytime but it's kind of different when family is involved.
Don't forget to buy lots of silver/amber jewllery. At least when I was last there, Poland was really very good for that kind of thing.
Thinking of which: if, while in Warsaw, you want a "Polish family experience", I'm sure my mother will put you in touch with my family there and they can perhaps entertain you for an evening or summat. Alternatively, she might put you in touch with my all-singing all-dancing cousin, Agata (who's a few years younger than me, currently studying at two schools including an arts one and working as part of the credited chorus for the Warsaw production of Cats - no seriously. She was a minor child celebrity after winning a Polish talent-seeking competition and has also been part of a soap-opera. She's really sweet and perhaps could drag you around to some more interesting things.)
I'm not really sure how far the "family" thing could be stretched (after all, they don't *know* you), but if you are willing to take one or two things from my mother and take one or two things back, then - well, damnit, you'll just *have* to meet them to do the exchange.
I know it's not a thrilling concept, but on the other hand it won't be "touristy" and sometimes it's nice to get out of the tourist fold, right?
If you were going to be in Poland longer I might have suggested a hamlet/farmstead you could have visited, for that authentic "olde worlde" touch, but perhaps it's a good thing you won't have the pleasure of Kolaki (pron: Kowaki - an "L" with a line through or over it is actually "w". "W" is "v"). As a kid I hated the place and would be stuck there for a good long weekend...with fresh chicken for dinner every night. Usually I saw it having it's head chopped off that morning.
Yum yum.
Call my mum. Get fed (actually, my uncle may be in the country at the moment, so you could perhaps meet him in advance! Now that would be nifty!). Disscuss the matter. Even just go and get my mum to show you photos and old photo books of Poland to give you some ideas if you like.
