It's not as scary as it seems not knowing the language - its suprising how much one can communicate by just by pointing and making facial gestures - in over 90% of situations this is more than enough. Looking lost and smiling usually works wonders too! :)
One thing I'd warn you about Russia is a very high level of security people who are everywhere, and who hassle asian-looking people (anyone who looks like they could be from Chechenya) so you'd have to be very careful if you ever visited the country.
